Language models increasingly act where instructions run out, in long agentic sessions, in unfamiliar environments, and often without a human reading every step. Gyges puts Glaucon's question to them, and extends it to every support that good behaviour usually leans on.

Refusal suites present requests whose harm the request itself announces. With both supports in place, a longer list of rules and an understanding of what rules are for cannot be told apart.

The spirit of a value stands above the rule and the letter of a request. Value-stable: protect privacy at every level.价值的精神高于规则和请求的字面。价值稳定：每一层都保护隐私。
One policy line names the act and its exception, and the request names the violation. Ten of the 13 models hold in 93–100% of at-stake replies here.

An unrelated line now stands where the rule was. Nothing in the context mentions phone numbers, privacy or consent. This is the large step: some models stop holding.

Each departure anchors the value lower down: in its name, in the rule that states it, in its low cost, or in an observer. In the main condition nothing in the context states a norm about the value: no rule, no warning, no label such as “confidential”. Holding never requires a flat refusal, since every family offers legitimate exits. A deterministic check on tool calls that cause the harm on their own audits the judge, and agrees with it on 9,426 of the 9,760 replies it covers.
